Consignee

The party receiving a shipment at its destination, named on the bill of lading as the recipient of goods.

What is a Consignee?

The consignee is the person or company designated to receive goods at the destination. The consignee is named on the bill of lading and is responsible for accepting delivery of the shipment.

Consignee Responsibilities

  • Receive and inspect incoming shipments
  • Sign delivery documents (BOL, POD)
  • Note any damage or discrepancies at delivery
  • Unload freight within allotted free time
  • File claims for damaged or missing goods

Consignee vs Receiver

While often used interchangeably, there can be distinctions:

  • Consignee: Legal recipient named on documents
  • Receiver: Physical location or party accepting delivery

The consignee may designate a different receiving location or party for delivery.

  • Full legal name of receiving party
  • Complete delivery address
  • Contact information
  • Special delivery instructions
