Parties

Shipper

The party that sends or ships goods to another party-typically the seller, manufacturer, or distributor originating the shipment.

What is a Shipper?

A shipper (also called consignor) is the party that sends goods to another party. In a typical transaction, the shipper is the seller, manufacturer, or distributor who originates the shipment and arranges for its transportation.

Shipper Responsibilities

  • Prepare goods for shipment
  • Package and label freight properly
  • Complete shipping documentation (BOL)
  • Arrange carrier pickup
  • Provide accurate weight and dimensions
  • Ensure compliance with regulations
  • Pay freight charges (if prepaid)

Shipper on BOL

The shipper section of a Bill of Lading includes:

  • Company name
  • Address
  • Contact information
  • Shipper reference numbers

Shipper vs Consignee

  • Shipper: Sends the goods (origin)
  • Consignee: Receives the goods (destination)

Third-Party Shipper

Sometimes a third party (broker, 3PL) arranges shipping on behalf of the actual goods owner. In this case, the "shipper of record" may differ from the physical pickup location.
