FTL (Full Truckload)

A shipping mode where goods occupy an entire truck trailer (typically 10,000+ lbs), moving directly from origin to destination without handling.

What is FTL?

FTL (Full Truckload), also called TL (Truckload), is a shipping mode where enough freight is shipped to fill an entire trailer. The trailer is dedicated to a single shipment and moves directly from origin to destination.

When to Use FTL

  • Shipments over 10,000 lbs
  • More than 10-12 pallets
  • Time-sensitive deliveries
  • High-value or fragile goods
  • When LTL pricing approaches FTL rates

FTL vs LTL

  • FTL: Dedicated trailer, direct route, no handling
  • LTL: Shared trailer, hub transfers, multiple stops

FTL Equipment Types

  • Dry Van: Standard enclosed trailer
  • Refrigerated (Reefer): Temperature-controlled
  • Flatbed: Open for oversized/heavy loads
  • Step Deck: Lower deck for tall freight
  • Conestoga: Flatbed with retractable cover

FTL Pricing Factors

  • Distance (miles)
  • Equipment type required
  • Market conditions (supply/demand)
  • Fuel costs
  • Accessorials (detention, lumper, etc.)
