LTL Shipping

NMFC (National Motor Freight Classification)

The standardized classification system published by NMFTA that assigns freight class codes to commodities for LTL shipping pricing and handling.

What is NMFC?

NMFC (National Motor Freight Classification) is a standardized freight classification system published by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA). It provides a consistent way to categorize commodities shipped via LTL, assigning each a class based on transportability characteristics.

NMFC Codes

Each commodity in the NMFC has a unique code (NMFC number) and an assigned freight class. For example:

  • NMFC 100310: Machinery, iron or steel
  • NMFC 116030: Furniture, wooden
  • NMFC 86720: Plastic articles

Classification Factors

  • Density: Weight per cubic foot
  • Stowability: How well it fits with other freight
  • Handling: Special requirements or equipment needed
  • Liability: Susceptibility to damage, theft, or spoilage

Why NMFC Matters

  • Required for LTL rate quotes
  • Listed on bill of lading
  • Incorrect codes lead to reclassification fees
  • Helps carriers price and handle freight appropriately
